Have you ever felt like stepping out into God's calling for your life only to face setbacks that make you question everything? You’re not alone. This journey is often marked by challenges, but these obstacles don’t mean we’re going in the wrong direction—they’re often a sign that we’re on the right path, and the enemy knows it.
Let’s explore the story of the sons of the prophets in 2 Kings 6:1–7, where God’s miraculous restoration reminds us of His power to restore, redeem, and equip us for His purpose.
The sons of the prophets were living under Elisha’s authority and guidance. They were learning, growing, and beginning to step into their prophetic roles. Yet, they faced a practical problem: their space was too small. This led them to ask Elisha for permission to expand their living quarters.
Key Principle: To grow, you must place yourself in environments where growth happens.
Growth isn’t passive. It requires positioning ourselves under godly authority and learning from those with more experience. As Paul wrote in Colossians 2:7, “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him.” Growth begins when we’re rooted in Christ and nourished by His truth.
When Elisha granted their request, the prophets didn’t just wait for God to expand their territory—they picked up tools and went to work. They knew that growth required effort. As they chopped trees by the Jordan, one man lost the head of his borrowed ax in the river.
Key Principle: Growth requires doing the hard things.
This mirrors our own lives. Often, we want results without the effort. We prefer quick fixes or shortcuts, but lasting growth requires persistence, sacrifice, and obedience. Whether it’s learning new habits, overcoming sin, or stepping into ministry, hard work is unavoidable.
When the ax head fell into the water, it could have spelled disaster. The prophet who borrowed the ax would have been burdened with a debt he couldn’t repay. But instead of despairing, he called out to Elisha, who performed a miracle by making the iron ax head float.
Why did Elisha use a stick? It’s a subtle yet powerful foreshadowing of Christ’s redemptive work through the cross. Just as the stick caused the ax head to rise, Jesus’ death and resurrection restore what we lose. He erases our mistakes and equips us to continue walking in our calling.
Key Principle: God restores what we lose in faithful service.
Even when we fail, God’s grace is sufficient. He ensures that nothing is truly lost when we are obedient and attentive to His leading.
The restoration of the ax head symbolizes how God covers our mistakes and enables us to fulfill His purpose. When we’re faithful to step out in obedience—even when we falter—He steps in to redeem and strengthen us.
As we’re reminded in Ecclesiastes 10:10, “If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed.” God not only restores what we lose but also gives us the wisdom to work smarter, not harder, as we grow in our calling.
God’s faithfulness in this story is a powerful reminder that no mistake is too big for His grace. If you’re feeling the weight of failure or the fear of stepping out, know this: God has your back. He surrounds you with His protection, equips you for the task, and restores what you lose along the way.
Every time you throw Jesus into the equation, miracles happen. Iron floats, callings are restored, and generations are changed. Stay obedient, do the hard things, and trust that God is working through you to bring about transformation.
Your calling is not lost—it’s being restored.
Augusta Church wants to help you become the person God made you to be. No matter where you are in your journey, you’re invited to discover your purpose and live it out at Augusta Church. It’s our prayer that you feel loved and welcome just as you are the moment you walk in our doors.
Augusta Kids is all about raising up the next generation to become sons and daughters of God. We are passionate about helping children identify their strengths and their call at the youngest age possible. We desire to guide them in their relationship with God and to prepare them for the power and presence of God and His glory. We aim to teach children about who God made them to be and to embrace a biblical perspective of their life and purpose. We work to help our kids become the next supernatural generation who engage in a church where they can help bring people into freedom by healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding the hungry, and taking care of the impoverished. We look forward to helping parents raise up a generation of spiritual warriors. We don't believe children have to wait for their calling to be enacted - we don't babysit we are called to equip.
There are times when life is overwhelming, when all we have is questions. In those moments, hope can feel far away. The great thing about prayer is that it shifts our perspective towards the One who stands ready to listen. No matter what you're facing, we'd love to pray with you!
