A Little Impacts A Lot We’ve been walking through the OT Miracles and lasts week we talked about restored callings. This week I believe goes hand in hand with last week because we seem to have this idea that those who are called are the ones who have big callings, but we fail to realize the impact of small actions taken everyday. We are going to be in second kings where Elisha gets called to fix an issue in the city of Jericho. When Jericho was conquered Joshua put a curse on the land Joshua 6:26 ESV 26 Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, “Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. “At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.” We see in 1 Kings 16:34 that this curse played out 1 Kings 16:34 ESV 34 In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho. He laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun. But the curse didn’t end for some reason the curse continued even passed it’s building. I often asked myself who would want to live in a cursed town, but then I look around and people carry curses and don’t desire to do the difficult things to change their situations. So here we are in 2 kings chapter 2 in these few verses 2 Kings 2:19–22 ESV 19 Now the men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees, but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful.” 20 He said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, “Thus says the Lord, I have healed this water; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it.” 22 So the water has been healed to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke. The first thing that strikes me is that from the outside perspective the city looked pleasant. It was a beautiful city. I could imagine the town being full of life, people out sweeping in front of their shops and homes and things looking very nice, but would remind me of Matthew 23:27 ESV 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. The water is contaminated. We discussed last week that water is represented of Holy Spirit so we can assume, in a Spiritual Sense, the idea of God, probably due to the curse, was contaminated. We cannot get right with God before we begin the journey of bringing truth to the lies we believe about God. Like any relaitonship we must be willing to confront misconceptions and offense before the relationship will grow. This is true about God as well. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve walked people through being angry at God and the wrong beliefs they held about God. Before you can do anything eternal for God you first need a right relationship with God! The Pharisees are a perfect example of this same idea. When we try to do things for God without knowing who God is we are building a Religion not a Relationship The last thing we want to do is build a religion—because then we contort scripture. Then my thought process take over and I ask why salt-And if God was going to take the credit for healing the water and not leave it to the mystery of the salt why would he use salt anyway? Last week we discussed the stick being thrown and there wasn’t a thus says the Lord the stick didn’t do it message, but there is here. This ties into our belief of God. Salt has many themes in the bible the two most prevalent are being filled with God’s word and Filled with Holy Spirit. Colossians 4:6 ESV 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. We should not only speak the word of God into situations, but we should also speak with the influence and power of Holy Spirit. The bible tells us that the Holy Spirit is give us words to speak when we don’t know what to say. But when we are cursed or walking outside of the power of Holy Spirit then our salt becomes saltless Matthew 5:13 ESV 13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. If the salt loses it’s taste or it’s saltiness than it goes bad. Just like a Christian who twists scripture or refuses to acknowledge the power of Holy Spirit in their life. Here’s the issue-how does the word lose it’s power? It gets watered down, twisted, or forgotten. We can’t be so afraid to offend men with truth that we offend God by twisting his words. There are only two ways the Word and Holy Spriit lose power God loses power-which is impossible or There is an issue during distribution once the power as left the main source. When salt is in it’s purest form it perseveres life. When we give the word at it’s purest form and we walk in the power of Holy Spirit in His purest form we are most powerful and this is the key to turning a little into a lot. Elisha takes a bowl of Salt—why a clean bowl? Because nothing can dilute the salt just as nothing should dilute God’s word. And throws it into the river. God’s power multiplies the little bit if salt. We don’t have to have a great understanding of scripture to make a huge impact in the people around us. We just have to have a pure understanding of the scripture we know. We don’t have to have this massive calling to do what God has called you to do. Yopu don’t need a big stage, you don’t need lights, you don’t need a million followers on socials. You just need the basic understanding of Christ cruicified for our sins, Forgiveness, Repentance and the love of God. You get this in the purest form of truth and God can take your little—your little knowledge, your little bit of time, your talent, your treasure and he can make a big impact in removing the curse of death in people’s lives and bring them into the preservatives of life and life more abundantly. Elisha wlaking in obedience took a clean bowl, a true word of God, and restored God’ presence in the town. No longer were they white washed tombs, but it was a powerful place filled with rich crops because clean water flowed through it’s town.

A Little Impacts A Lot

Walking through the miracles of the Old Testament, we recently discussed the idea of restored callings. This week, we’re diving into a truth that goes hand in hand with last week’s topic: the impact of small, consistent actions. Often, we believe that only those with "big callings" make a difference, but the story of Elisha in 2 Kings 2 challenges that assumption. Small actions, when paired with obedience to God, can make a massive impact.

A Curse That Lingers

The story begins in Jericho, a city cursed by Joshua after its conquest:

“Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.”(Joshua 6:26, ESV)

This curse tragically played out in 1 Kings 16:34 when Hiel rebuilt Jericho, losing his sons in the process. But even after its reconstruction, the curse seemed to linger. The water was contaminated, and the land was unfruitful. Despite the city’s outward beauty, it remained spiritually and physically barren.

This reminds me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 23:27:

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.”

Like Jericho, we can look good on the outside but remain spiritually broken on the inside. The first step to true restoration is addressing the deeper issues.

The Power of Small Acts

In 2 Kings 2:19-22, we see the people of Jericho turn to Elisha for help:

“Behold, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees, but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful.”

Elisha’s response was simple yet profound. He asked for a clean bowl, filled it with salt, and threw it into the water. Then he declared:

“Thus says the Lord, I have healed this water; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it.”(2 Kings 2:21, ESV)

Immediately, the water was healed, and the city was transformed. What stands out here is the simplicity of the act. God’s power wasn’t in the salt itself but in Elisha’s obedience and the declaration of God’s truth.

This ties into a deeper spiritual principle: even small actions, when aligned with God’s will, can produce extraordinary results.

The Symbolism of Salt

Salt carries rich symbolism throughout Scripture. It represents purity, preservation, and the transformative power of God’s Word and Spirit. Consider these passages:

Salt is effective because it’s pure and potent. When we dilute the truth of God’s Word or ignore the power of the Holy Spirit, we lose our "saltiness." To make an impact, we need to share God’s Word in its purest form, empowered by the Spirit.

Avoiding Twisted Truths

One of the greatest dangers is allowing the Word of God to become watered down, twisted, or forgotten. When this happens, we’re no longer effective in carrying out God’s mission. Jesus warned against prioritizing human approval over divine truth:

“We can’t be so afraid to offend men with truth that we offend God by twisting His words.”

Turning a Little Into a Lot

Elisha’s act of throwing a small amount of salt into the water demonstrates a powerful truth: God can multiply even the smallest act of obedience. You don’t need a large platform, extensive knowledge, or great resources to make a difference. What you need is a pure understanding of Christ crucified, forgiveness, repentance, and the love of God.

When you offer your "little" to God—your time, talents, or treasure—He can use it to bring life and abundance to those around you. Just as the water in Jericho was transformed, your small steps of faith can restore life, break curses, and bring spiritual fruitfulness to barren places.

A Restored City

Because of Elisha’s obedience, Jericho was no longer a cursed, barren city. It became a place of life and abundance, with clean water flowing through its streets. This transformation started with something as small as a bowl of salt.

What small step of obedience can you take today? Whether it’s sharing a kind word, praying for someone, or speaking truth in love, remember that God can take your little and make it a lot. Trust Him, obey Him, and watch how He multiplies your efforts for His glory.

We aim to teach children about who God made them to be and to embrace a biblical perspective of their life and purpose. We work to help our kids become the next supernatural generation who engage in a church where they can help bring people into freedom by healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding the hungry, and taking care of the impoverished. We look forward to helping parents raise up a generation of spiritual warriors. We don't believe children have to wait for their calling to be enacted - we don't babysit we are called to equip.
