Overflow and Abundance: The Call to Seek and Know God

September 30, 20243 min read

In our fast-paced world, we often find ourselves chasing after quick answers and easy solutions. But in the kingdom of God, there's a different principle at work—one that requires us to slow down, dig deep, and seek Him with intention. The parables in Mark 4 reveal this divine process of growth, showing us that those who seek God through His Word will not only find what they are looking for, but also receive abundantly more.

Light unto my feet

Mark 4 is packed with teachings, beginning with the parable of the sower, where Jesus explains the different ways His Word is received. Some hearts are hardened, others are shallow, and some are overrun by distractions. But the key message is this: the Word of God is like a seed, and when it is planted in good soil—receptive hearts—it grows and bears fruit. In fact, it’s not just a small return, but a harvest of abundance.

When Jesus talks about a lamp in Mark 4:21-22, He’s building on this idea of growth. The Jewish people understood the Torah—God’s Word—as a lamp that gives light and understanding. Jesus is saying that we don’t take this light and hide it away; we don’t leave it on a shelf, collecting dust. Instead, we bring it into our lives, allowing it to shine in our hearts and guide our steps. The beauty of this truth is that when we make God’s Word a priority, "more will be added to you" (Mark 4:24).

But this process isn’t just about surface-level understanding. The Lord is inviting us into a deeper relationship, one that requires us to dig, to explore, and to follow the trails that lead to greater revelations. He’s not hiding Himself from us—He wants to be known. As we seek Him in His Word, we will discover not only what we set out to find, but also things we didn’t even know we needed. It’s the divine principle of abundance: to the measure you seek, so it will be measured back to you (Mark 4:24-25).

This brings us to the closing parable, the mustard seed. The Kingdom of God is like a tiny mustard seed that, when planted, grows into a large tree. It may start small, but it has the potential to become something mighty. The Word of God works the same way in our hearts. It may seem small when we begin, but as we grow in knowledge and obedience, it multiplies, shaping us into the likeness of Christ. The seed is powerful, but it requires our participation. We must plant it, nurture it, and allow it to take root.

However, there’s a sobering warning here. Jesus says, "For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away" (Mark 4:25). This isn’t about material possessions—it’s about spiritual growth. The Word of God, if neglected, can harden our hearts rather than transform them. We’re either moving closer to God or drifting away from Him; there is no middle ground.

So how do we move closer to God? It begins with receiving the fullness of Scripture, even the challenging parts. It means following through on the convictions the Word brings, addressing sin and demonic strongholds in our lives, and truly repenting. It’s not enough to accept Christ as Savior—we must also make Him Lord over every part of our lives.

The promise of abundance is clear: when we seek God with our whole heart, when we dig deep into His Word, He will reveal Himself to us in ways beyond our expectations. And the more we seek, the more He will show us.

So let’s take up the call to sow the seeds of God’s Word in our hearts. Let’s commit to seeking Him, not casually or occasionally, but with intentionality. The reward is not just knowledge—it’s knowing God Himself. And in knowing Him, we find life, growth, and the abundance our souls crave.

You're Welcome Here

Augusta Church wants to help you become the person God made you to be. No matter where you are in your journey, you’re invited to discover your purpose and live it out at Augusta Church. It’s our prayer that you feel loved and welcome just as you are the moment you walk in our doors.

Kids Ministry

Augusta Kids is all about raising up the next generation to become sons and daughters of God. We are passionate about helping children identify their strengths and their call at the youngest age possible. We desire to guide them in their relationship with God and to prepare them for the power and presence of God and His glory. We aim to teach children about who God made them to be and to embrace a biblical perspective of their life and purpose. We work to help our kids become the next supernatural generation who engage in a church where they can help bring people into freedom by healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding the hungry, and taking care of the impoverished. We look forward to helping parents raise up a generation of spiritual warriors. We don't believe children have to wait for their calling to be enacted - we don't babysit we are called to equip.

Need Prayer?

There are times when life is overwhelming, when all we have is questions. In those moments, hope can feel far away. The great thing about prayer is that it shifts our perspective towards the One who stands ready to listen. No matter what you're facing, we'd love to pray with you!
