Overcoming Pride and Embracing Obedience: Lessons from Naaman’s Story
The story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 offers a profound message about the dangers of pride, the power of faith, and the necessity of obedience in receiving healing and walking in our God-given calling. Though Naaman was a mighty man of valor and a great leader, his life was overshadowed by a fatal flaw—leprosy. This disease not only threatened his physical well-being but also symbolized the spiritual struggles many of us face today.
In Leviticus 13, leprosy is described as a condition that:
Goes deeper than the skin (v. 3), just as sin impacts the heart.
Spreads rapidly (v. 7), much like unchecked sin.
Defiles the whole person (v. 45), as sin corrupts our mind and spirit.
Separates us from God and others (v. 46), illustrating the isolating effects of sin.
Is ultimately fit only for destruction by fire (vv. 52, 57), mirroring the eternal consequences of unrepentant sin.
These parallels remind us that sin, like leprosy, is a death sentence without divine intervention.
Naaman’s story reveals that even great people with significant callings can face struggles that hinder their effectiveness. Despite his victories and status, Naaman’s pride became a barrier to his healing. When the prophet Elisha instructed him to wash in the Jordan River seven times, Naaman initially refused because the solution seemed too simple and undignified.
This moment highlights a critical truth:
You cannot want glory more than you want God.
Naaman’s servants, in their humility and wisdom, urged him to obey the prophet’s instructions. Their reasoning was simple: “If the prophet had asked you to do something difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? How much more, then, when he says, ‘Wash and be clean’?”
Naaman’s eventual obedience to Elisha’s word led to complete restoration. He dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, symbolizing both divine intervention and the completion of the process. His skin was not just healed but made as clean as that of a young child.
This act teaches us that partial obedience is not enough. Like completing a course of antibiotics, spiritual healing requires full obedience to God’s instructions. Cutting corners or stopping midway can leave the root of the issue unaddressed, allowing it to resurface stronger than before.
Struggles Don’t Disqualify Your Calling
Naaman’s leprosy didn’t negate his calling as a mighty man of valor, but it could have hindered his ability to fulfill that calling. Similarly, our struggles don’t disqualify us, but they must be addressed to walk fully in our purpose.
Faith and Humility Lead to Breakthrough
The faith of a young servant girl and the humility of Naaman’s servants played key roles in his healing. Their trust in God’s power and their willingness to speak truth in love remind us of the importance of community and accountability.
Obedience Unlocks the Blessing
God’s instructions may not always align with our expectations, but obedience to His Word is the key to receiving His promises. Pride and preconceived notions can block our blessings, but a humble heart paves the way for transformation.
Naaman’s journey challenges us to confront the pride, sin, or doubt that may hinder our spiritual growth. God desires to bring complete healing and restoration, but we must be willing to humble ourselves, obey His Word, and trust His process.
No matter what you’re facing, remember: God has already prepared the way for your breakthrough. Will you take the step of faith and obey?

Augusta Kids is all about raising up the next generation to become sons and daughters of God. We are passionate about helping children identify their strengths and their call at the youngest age possible. We desire to guide them in their relationship with God and to prepare them for the power and presence of God and His glory. We aim to teach children about who God made them to be and to embrace a biblical perspective of their life and purpose. We work to help our kids become the next supernatural generation who engage in a church where they can help bring people into freedom by healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding the hungry, and taking care of the impoverished. We look forward to helping parents raise up a generation of spiritual warriors. We don't believe children have to wait for their calling to be enacted - we don't babysit we are called to equip.
There are times when life is overwhelming, when all we have is questions. In those moments, hope can feel far away. The great thing about prayer is that it shifts our perspective towards the One who stands ready to listen. No matter what you're facing, we'd love to pray with you!
